With this volume, it is the dedication, not the book that is of main interest. The book itself is an unremarkable paperback of Watership Down, merely a reading copy. The dedication, pasted onto the inside of the board is the main point of interest.
By way of an introduction, putting the inscription in context, we need to know something of the history of the signer of the inscription. The 7th Earl of Cardigan, Tames Thomas Brudenell led the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. He died without issue in 1858 when the title passed to a near relative, the 2nd Marquis of AILESBURY. So, the present 8th Marquis (see signature) is the 14th Earl of Cardigan although by tradition this title is used by the son of the Marquis.
As you can see the dedication explains that the book is a present in gratitude for the books owner singing in the choir at the memorial service for the 7th Marquis, who died in 1974. The dedication is pasted into this book and is signed by the 8th Marquis of AILESBURY.
