In HELL’S FOUNDATION, Geoffey Moorhouse, himself a Lancastrian whose Grandfather served in the Lancashire Fusiliers at Gallipoli, recounts the effect that Gallipoli had on the townsfolk of Bury, Lancs, , the home of the Lancashire Fusiliers. The regiment left 1,816 dead men at Gallipoli and 13,642 in total in the whole of The Great War. In this slaughter the town lost a whole generation of its youth; the effect on the town, like many others in the land, was huge. The memory of Gallipoli has meant that the commemoration of that campaign is comparable to Anzac Day in the Antipodes. Geoffrey Moorhouse tells this story in this book. The book is in very good condition, but the dustjacket is price clipped and has one or two small marks and tiny tears. Interestingly this book is signed by the author and dedicated to Kevin Hill MBE. MC., one of Bury’s most decorated soldiers (and a Lancashire Fusilier). Lt Col. Kevin Hill saw service in North Africa in 1941 and at Monte Cassino. An interesting dedication makes this book a useful acquisition by any military history buff who has an interest in the Lancashire Fusiliers.
